International "Memory and Hope" conference dedicated to Poles who saved Jews

The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Star of the New Evangelization and St. John Paul II in Toruń hosted the International "Memory and Hope" conference devoted to the memory of Poles who saved Jews during the Second World War. The meeting was concluded with participants praying in Hebrew and Polish.

The conference was opened by the director of Radio Maryja, Fr. Tadeusz Rydzyk, who welcomed the guests.

The Chairman of Law and Justice, Jarosław Kaczyński, addressed a letter to the attendees of the conference.

“The social depiction of the assistance provided by Poles to Jews during the Second World War is still falsified for various reasons. This has happened, to a great extent, due to the pedagogy of shame by the Polish establishment and the anti-histological policy resulting from it,” Jaroslaw Kaczynski wrote in the letter addressing the participants of the International "Memory and Hope" conference in the Toruń church. The letter was read out by the deputy speaker of the Sejm, Joachim Brudziński.

“Let us pray that as a nation we never have to face totalitarianism again,” the PiS chairman stressed.

Jonny Daniels, the head of the "From The Depths" Foundation, emphasized that Jews would always be grateful to Poles for their openness.

“It is an honour to be able to commemorate those who risked their lives and sacrificed them for their loved ones. For 1000 years the Jewish community lived in Poland next to their neighbours. This existence at some point became impossible. Jews will always be grateful to Poles for their openness and accepting them on Polish soil. Standing here is a great and instructive experience,” said Daniels.

The conference was held in the Chapel of Remembrance in the Sanctuary. The chapel is a form of monument, created from the desire to pay homage to Poles, who at the risk of their own lives and that of their families saved Jews during World War II. Its initiator was Father Tadeusz Rydzyk.
