The Internet

Market surveys from 2007 show that over a half (54%) of Polish households had a computer, and 39.2% had access to the Internet (according to official Central Statistical Office data, in 2006 45% of Polish households had a computer and 36% were connected to the Internet.) According to research conducted between February and April, 42.3% of Polish residents are Internet users, which in absolute numbers equals to an impressive 12.7 million.

The decisive factor in equipping households with technological novelties is the level of income followed by the presence of children in the family, and the place of residence. The largest groups of people who use the Internet regularly can be found among students (81%), people with higher education (72%) and city dwellers (48%). In 2007, 73.8% of self‑employed people and 20% of farmers used the Internet.

In 2007, most households that used the Internet had a fixed line, and only 5% used traditional modems or a regular fixed telephony link. To connect with the Internet, most Poles use an ADSL connection (37% of the respondents), 22% use a cable TV connection, and 20% use the services of their local ISP.

In comparison with the European market, Poland is the undisputed leader in broadband Internet access using technologies other than DSL. Poland is the only European Union member state which in 2006 added over 0.5 million new cable TV, radio or satellite connections on top of the existing ones.
