Andrzej Wajda's "Katyń" nominated for an Oscar
"Katyń" directed by Andrzej Wajda, the Honorary Academy Award winner, tells a story of atrocities committed against Polish officers during World War II. The film has received a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Nearly 90 films from all over the world competed for nominations in this category.
"I’ve received the news, so important for my film "Katyń", this afternoon. The very nomination is a recognition for my film and offers a great chance of attracting interest of international distributors and audiences. It is important for me the more so that "Katyń" is certainly my most personal film. It is in Katyń that I lost my Father Captain Jakub Wajda, murdered by the Soviets, I was also a witness to my Mother's desperate search efforts. Katyń still remains an unhealed wound in Poland's past, shown for the first time on screen. I wish to stress it again how happy I am that the Academy noticed "Katyń" and found it worthy of such a great distinction," said Andrzej Wajda after Oscar nominations had been announced.
